He boasts victories over boxing royalty like Mikkel Kessler (for the WBA super-middleweight title), Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch, and Chad Dawson (unifying the titles). He even climbed to light-heavyweight and famously dethroned the previously undefeated Sergey Kovalev, a unified champion holding three belts! Ward then cemented his dominance by knocking out Kovalev in their highly anticipated rematch. Just when he was at the peak of his powers, at only 33 years old, he shocked the boxing world by announcing his retirement.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite all those incredible wins against elite opponents, Ward doesn't credit any of them with delivering his most punishing blow. In an interview last year with Boxing News, when asked about the hardest hitter he ever faced, Ward didn't hesitate. The name he dropped? Edison Miranda, a Colombian fighter who, despite his power, never managed to capture a world championship belt.
"The hardest puncher was definitely Edison Miranda – no doubt about that," Ward stated emphatically. Think about that for a moment. Ward faced some of the most technically gifted and powerful boxers of his generation, yet he singles out Miranda.
Ward's fight against Miranda took place in 2009, just before his title shot against Kessler. He won the fight by unanimous decision, successfully defending his NABF super-middleweight title. It was a clear victory for Ward, but the memory of Miranda's power clearly stuck with him.
And this is the part most people miss... Edison Miranda was known for his raw power and aggressive style. While he lacked the finesse and tactical brilliance of some of Ward's other opponents, his sheer punching power was undeniable. He wasn't a world champion, but he possessed a dangerous weapon that even a fighter of Ward's caliber respected. Miranda twice challenged for a world title. He lost to Arthur Abraham (then the IBF middleweight champion) by decision in 2006. Later, in 2010, he was stopped by Lucian Bute in the third round while vying for the IBF super-middleweight title. Those losses highlight that boxing is more than just power, it's about technique, strategy, and endurance.
