NETBALL NEWS - Under the guidance of head coach Jenny van Dyk, the SPAR Proteas reaffirmed their status as Africa’s top team by defeating Uganda 56-34 in the final. This triumph marked a record-extending fifth title for South Africa on the continental stage.

The final pitted the SPAR Proteas against Uganda, as both teams aimed to defend their title in Lilongwe. South Africa arrived with a flawless record in the tournament, feeling confident and ready to reclaim the championship they’ve dominated for years.

From the opening whistle, South Africa set the pace. Coach van Dyk opted for a slightly altered starting lineup compared to the semi-final against Zimbabwe. Notably, skipper Khanyisa Chawane was unavailable, with Elmere van der Berg stepping in as captain in her absence. The Proteas pressed Uganda early, taking a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.

The starting seven remained unchanged into the second quarter, and South Africa continued to apply pressure as they pushed toward the finish line. The defense was exceptionally disciplined, limiting Uganda to nine goals while South Africa tallied 11. By halftime, the Proteas led 27-16.

During the third quarter, adjustments were made to manage key players. Refiloe Nketsa picked up a caution, and Van Dyk responded by bringing Sanmarie Visser on at Goal Defence and shifting Jamie van Wyk to Wing Defence to fill Nketsa’s role. The Proteas extended their advantage with a 17-10 quarter, bringing the overall score to 44-26.

Ultimately, South Africa’s cohesive game plan and precise execution secured the championship. The final whistle confirmed a 56-34 victory, crowning the SPAR Proteas as Africa’s champions for the fifth time—an unprecedented milestone.

Head Coach Jenny van Dyk reflected, “Uganda challenged us and pushed us hard on the day. We knew we had to deliver a strong game plan and win the circle battles. I want to commend Uganda for a fantastic final and for playing so well. Our target as a team is to reach 60 points; we fell short today, but what matters most is that we are champions.”

Earlier in the day, the South Africa Men’s team also secured the African title after defeating Zimbabwe 40-29, with Coach Jabulani Vilane guiding them to their second championship in three years.
